I got to the scene just before dark, got a couple of pictures and then set about getting hold of more dramatic pictures from earlier in the day. I knocked on a few houses then found someone who knew someone who had some fire pics and they arranged for them to be emailed through to me. The next person I spoke to pointed me in the direction of Sue who had some great pictures of the local residents and firefighters digging the snow from the road to help the appliances get to the fire. Sue was pre warned that I was making my way to her door and I was welcomed in and given a gratefully received cup of coffee while I downloaded her images to my mac and checked my email to see if the fire pictures had arrived. They had and they were great pictures, showing the fire crews on foot tackling the blaze.
I quickly captioned the images and sent them through to the Sun picture desk and started my journey home. I spoke to another photographer as I walked and he said that I should try to get some more money out of the Sun because of walking all that way but I joked they would probably pay me less because I wouldn't have used any petrol! It's amazing how helpful some people can be.... Talking to some of the locals there it seemed that almost everybody was out that morning trying to help in one way or another. As well as people trying to clear the road, youngsters were taking time off from snowballing and playing to try to locate the snow concealed hydrants. A real "backs to the wall" effort to try and help people in trouble. The next day I checked the paper but the Sun didn't use the pictures! It happens like that. For me though it was worth the walk. It's amazing how helpful some people can be, even people who don't even know you. My thanks go to Sue and Richard who helped me out with these great images, and to Sue and her husband for their time and hospitality too. Ian
